THE BRIEF
An experimental type based brief that focuses on celebrating the beauty of poetry, creating a unique visual project in response to a collection of intellectual, complex and written words. The purpose of the project was to promote reading poetry, targeting a wide audience of people, aged 14 and above. The primary target audience are people visiting libraries, public spaces, passing by in the street or using public transport. The deliverables for the project included an interestingly folded poster design containing the chosen poetic content and a series of additional advertisement to further promote poetry.
THE RESPONSE
'Jesus Green Lido'
THE FOLDED POSTER DESIGN

My aim with this project is to convey the conceptual thought provoking content of poetry into creative outcomes to inspire people to connect with both poetry and themselves. I intend to celebrate the significance of gentle movement for meditative practice through the beauty of creative poetry.
I chose to theme the project around two poems. The first extract, Jesus Green Lido (written by Charlotte Nicol), embraces the benefits of moving your body through cold water to escape the realities of everyday, whilst the second poem, Summer Solstice 2022 (written by Jeanette Winterson), highlights the importance of simply ‘being’. The thought provoking questions asked within Summer Solstice reflected the thoughts and ideas with Charlotte’s poetry.
DEVELOPMENT OVERVIEW

As the reader folds out the poster, the second poem is revealed. The paragraph has been styled to reflect the motion of someone swimming through water. The final fold out cuts through the middle of the poem, ‘diving’ into the full poster design.
This triptic poster series is designed to draw attention to the poetic words and includes a call to action with a QR code linking to the Cambridge Literary Festival (the chosen collaborative event) website for further information.

The first poem was inspired by the author’s experience of Jesus Green Lido in Cambridge. I thought it would be a unique idea to projection map the poetry onto the water, given the nature of the theme. This experience would hopefully target the younger audience as well older people, aiming to get the public more interested in reading poetry. The immersive nature of projection mapping would help create a more memorable experience, providing an interactive element.
